Ch 5: #25 (11/12/12)
In the cases of Kenna's music and the Aeron chair we see that first impressions can often lead us astray. What we initially judge as disapproval may just be a case of confusion or mistrust for something new and different. How can we distinguish a decision motivated by fear of the unknown from the ones that stem from genuine dislike towards something? Are we better off leaving it to the experts to tell us what we should like?

No, I don't think we are better off leaving it to the experts to tell us what we should like because we should be able to make our own decisions. That is like saying, if the experts told you it was cool to jump off a bridge, would you? You probably wouldn't, but a less extreme example is if experts told you that the "Peter Pan collar" is in style, would you wear wear it? This answer all depends on the person and what they think is fashionable. I personally did not like this new trend because it reminded me of my current and previous school uniforms. I knew this stemmed from genuine dislike because of my past experiences from wearing the uniforms. Yes, others might fear that this is too daring and may be hesitant to try it. But that doesn't mean that they should leave it for an "expert" to decide for them. Ultimately what might happen to that fearful person is that they may encounter this trend a lot, causing them to be more accustomed to it. In a way this will "pressure" them into trying it and they will buy a shirt with a Peter Pan collar because they see a lot of people wearing it.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think we should leave it to the experts. We should be able to decide what we like and decide what decisions we make on our own. My mom would always say she doesn't care about what everyone else is doing she only cares about what I'm doing. An example would be if everyone cheated on the test would you cheat on the test? It shouldn't be what the experts say everyone is doing it should be your own opinion and what you think is the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that we should leave it to the experts to tell us what we should, and shouldn't like. Everyone is different and everyone has their different opinions on things. Movies are a good example for this. I've seen tons of movies that have gotten bad reviews from critics, but in the end i loved the movie! If i thought the movie was going to be interesting but it got bad reviews, i wouldn't just not go see it because of that.
ReplyDeleteDecisions motivated by fear of the unknown can be distinguished from a genuine dislike towards something due to past experiences, exposure to something, or by not judging something based on a snap judgment. For example, if you watched a TV show with a gay couple on it, you may be shocked at first and not like the show. However, if you continue to watch it, the gay couple that was once shocking will become normal because you are exposed and have become familiar with the situation. Now you are capable of deciding whether you did not like the show because it was shocking or you really just did not like the show's plot, acting, etc. We are not better off leaving it to the experts to tell us what we should like because we should make those decisions for ourselves. Sometimes what experts like is different from what a normal person would like. For example, in fashion, some of the clothes designers say are fashionable are clothes I personally would not wear. Therefore, this example demonstrates how everybody has different experiences and personal preferences that shape what we like and dislike.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe we should leave "it" to the experts because we should all have our own say and our own opinions and not just feel a certain way because others tell us to. For example, experts can say that a certain abstract painting is beautiful and creative while I stare at it and have no idea what the artist was trying to portray with his finger painting. I know this is not a fear of the unknown because I am using my appreciation of aesthetics to form an opinion of the work of art. Just because the experts say something is beautiful does not mean we need to think the same thing. We should use our own opinions and life experiences to decide how we feel about a certain event or object.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone in that we shouldn't leave it to the experts, but in reality we do. Going off of what Caitlin said, if the experts told us that a certain item of clothing was in style, most people listen to them. Regardless of whether we like it or not, the commercial/advertisement tells us that we should. If someone genuinely doesn't like a certain style, they shouldn't have to be persuaded into liking it. The media changes how we see certain things. I think that we need to avoid listening to what the society tells us to like. We can do this by limiting our time spent looking at tv, megazines, internet, etc.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that experts should tell people what we should or should not like. Every person in the world was born with different beliefs, aspirations, opinions, thoughts, etc. We grow as an individual each day when we accept others no matter their differences. In this case, an expert's idea may not relate or correspond other people's differences. In other words, an expert may tell us in order to succeed in life, a person has to buy an iPad. In this scenario, every one would go out and buy and iPad so they can be seen as "successful." On the other hand, those who cannot afford an iPad will see as inferior and not as "successful" in life to those who can. This can lead us and others to judge these individuals who cannot afford an iPad and not accept the fact that they are not as fortunate.
ReplyDeleteIn the cases of Kenna's music and the Aeron chair we see that first impressions can often lead us astray. What we initially judge as disapproval may just be a case of confusion or mistrust for something new and different. Personally, I do not believe experts should tell us what we should or should not like. If a person tells us to do something completely ridiculous, do we listen? We are responsible for ourselves and we make our own decisions without being told what to do. Sometimes, we do get caught up in what the expert in fashion say and we do listen to them. I think that is more of taking their advice on what is "in" and "popular". We can distinguish a decision motivated by fear of the unknown from the ones that stem from genuine dislike towards something by taking our own initiative and doing what we think is right or what we want to do. We do not always have to listen to others who may know more.
ReplyDeleteI do not think we should leave it to the experts to decide what we should like. Everyone has a different point of view. You cannot leave it to one person to decide whether something is good or not. If your favorite movie was rated 2.5 out of 5 stars would that change your opinion of the movie? Hopefully not. In order to develop a true opinion of something you need to experience it for yourself.
ReplyDeleteWe should not leave it to the experts because if we were to allow others to have a say in whether or not we liked something, we would have no opinions of our own. We would rely on others to make decisions for us and end up being completely conformed. Although I wish society was different, it is somewhat true that we do agree to what is "in" even if we may not believe in it or particularly like it. It almost seems unfair that society has such an impact on us because it doesn't allow us to really be ourselves without being judged or looked down upon. But by forming an opinion on something before I agree to allow it to impact me, I can get one step closer to distinguishing whether or not I made the decision myself or allowed society to decide for me.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we should not leave anything to the experts as to what we like and dont like in life. No one has any right to force you to like something because they believe it is right. Everyone has their own judgements and own thin slicing as to what they feel they like and what they feel is wrong. I feel we are better off making our own decisions and our own opinions.
ReplyDeleteI think the unknown is very powerful and scary. The reason why we fear the unknown so much is because we dont what comes of it even experts couldnt tell us about any unknown because we havnt experienced it ourselves. The reason we truly do dislike something or have no regard for it, is because we have some kind of experience with whatever event we happened to be involved in. That is why I dont believe that we should follow what experts say. We should follow our own thin-slicing and make our own judgements because we dont know everything until we try it out for ourselves.
We should not leave it up to experts to make the decision as to what we like and don't like. Everyone thin-slices when they see something new and different to them, that's just our nature. We don't know what we'll like until we try it for ourselves and experience it. It is very hard for us to distinguish a decision motivated by fear of the unknown from the ones that stem from genuine dislike towards something. The reason we dislike things though is because we have some sort of experience that wards us away from it. You never truly know about something until you give it a try. That is why I believe we should follow our own judgments and not rely on experts to make decisions for us.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think we should leave it up to the experts to tell us what we should like or what we shouldn't. The experts might have more knowledge on a certain thing but at the end of the day I have to right to my own opinion. I think decision making can be extremely difficult but I think we learn from our mistakes so even if we make a bad decision or choice we come out of it learning what not to do. If you constantly listen to experts and what they have to say, you won’t have your own opinion and you won’t try new things.
ReplyDeleteI dont think we should leave it up to the experts. We are our own person with our own opinions and thoughts. WE should have someone telling us what we should and should don't like. zthe world is based on all different kids of opinions, on how we should pray, eat, feel. that is what makes that world suh an amazing thing, you can go anywhere and learn something new meet people that have different beliefs and talk about them. So in conclusion, we as human beings have the free will to choice what to like and what dont to.
ReplyDeleteNo 'expert' should tell a person how to think or feel. It is our right and duty to ourselves to form our own opinions. If we let experts tell us how we feel about something, then we are giving away something very important. If we don't like Brand A of Vanilla ice cream but we like Brand B, who should tell us that's wrong? Whether it makes sense on paper or it makes sense in your head, your opinions are valid.
ReplyDeleteNo I feel that we should not leave it up to the experts on how to think or feel about something new. I feel that we should not have someone telling us what we should feel or not. We have our own feelings and our feelings are what make us who we are. We all are our individual and we have a different say on everything we do. Everyone has a different opinion about everything and I feel it would just not be a fair thing to go by.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is difficult to differentiate whether your disapproval is caused by fear or dislike. The only person who is able to genuinely judge that is yourself. Experts have theories and the scientific method; however, they do not personally interact with an individual, nor are they the individual. I believe one finds the reason for their disapproval throughout time. There is no need for an immediate answer, whether it be fear or dislike. If one has a certain aversion to an object, they express disapproval. Whether that disapproval lasts or it fades into acceptance (or even approval) is the decision of the individual. I do not feel that the experts should tell us what we think. They should rather allow us to explore and figure the answers for ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThe fear of the unknown can cause a general disliking towards something- they are interconnected. For example, for years I was afraid to ice skate because I didn't know what to expect; however, once I got into the rink and tried it, I realized it didn't deserve the negative connotation. I believe that we should not let experts determine how we feel about something; we have the free will to think for ourselves and choose what we like and dislike based on our own experiences- not someone else's opinion. I know that if a person tried to control how I felt about things, I would be sure to voice my true opinion and not be led astray based on the other person's opinion, no matter how much of an "expert" they might be considered.
ReplyDeleteThe fear of the unknown can influence many decisions. This can be easily confused with actual dislike towards something. For example, I would tell my parents that I absolutely hated artichokes. But in reality, I've never had them before and I was just scared to try them. It wasn't a genuine dislike. I feel like everyone knows whether or not they genuinely like something or they are scared of the unknown element of it. another example could be people who are homophobic. They are very biased and judgmental to people who are gay and not like them, but in reality they could just not understand them. I know many people who say, "gay people are weird and its just stupid. They probably just do it for attention". These are very hateful remarks to people that have done nothing to you. The hateful remarks, I feel, stem from people just not understanding what it means to be gay and how the person did not chose it. If we left our opinions of what we liked and disliked to "experts" and society, we would all be the same. America is a melting pot of different opinion, ethnicity, religions, and races. If we relied on other people to tell us what we think, we would not be original or the (arguably) best country in the world.
